LAKE NYABIKERE IN ISUNGA

Did you know that Lake Nyabikere is one of the crater lakes found in Kibale Ndali Kasenda craters that was named after the frogs which make a lot of noise at night?

Lake Nyabikere is a crater lake in Kabarole district, western Uganda. It’s one of the crater lakes in Fort portal with a lot of dramatic beauty sitting 1384 meters above the sea level. It’s famously known as the lake of frogs, due to the existence of many frogs that normally make a lot of noise especially at night. It is 69m deep and 1km wide with diverse wildlife life fish, monkeys, baboons and bird species.

This is the only lake you can view as you head to Kibale national park for chimpanzee tracking from Fort-portal town. It is just 18km from Fort-portal to reach this lake and this can take approximately 25minutes, the lake offers beautiful scenery of Rwenzori ranges and Kibale forest.

Lake Nyabikere was formed around 10,000 years ago before history and this was due to the violet volcanic eruption activities led to the blowing off of the surface leaving behind the depression. The debris from the exploration created a visible rim around the depression. Later, the depression was filed with rainwater to create a lake.

The lake is bilharzia free and this makes it good for swimming. Other activities taking place are fishing, birding, Canoeing, farming and tree planting (afforestation) among others. It is fed by five rivers i.e. Buhoro, Kibo, Kanyabaisiki, Kamunga and Kanyabuhuka and only one outlet River Nyabikere that finds its way to Kibale forest.

Lake Nyabikere is one of the crater lakes that overlook the aspiring stigma of the mountains of the moon (Rwenzori Mountain) with its clear snow views being a captivating insight for an eye sight, watching the drastic Snow fall off horizons in a distance.

The silver blue waters of Lake Nyabikere gives a tandem feeling found nowhere else but only here, from the tall vegetation around the lake edges to the wonderful picturesque views across the lake, Lake Nyabikere has attracted an insight authentic destination for all Eco-tourism safaris for the visiting travelers on a Uganda Safari.

Lake Nyabikere is a watering point to vast dwellers around the ancient trees undisturbed by humans but just overtaken by nature; includes the hundreds of bird species that normally visit the lake, some nest in the nearby forests (Fish eagles, Herons, hamerkop, King fishers, cranes, Broadbills, bee-eaters among others), the adjacent forest is also home to hundreds of frogs, primates such as the black and white colobus monkeys, red tailed monkeys, olive baboon, varvet monkeys among others.

Taking a walk around this lake in adventurous as you pass through different cultural communities occupied by the Batooro and Bakiga that practice the traditional gardening, view different homesteads, bird species and also engage in fishing.

This lake is blessed with two hippos that originated from Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth NP passing through the valleys and forests as they found their way to this lake. Reptiles that are found in this lake are the snakes, monitor lizards.
